As I sit here on my verandah and watch the sun go down,
And listen to the sounds that make this quiet coastal town,
I watch the traffic passing by on the highway down below,
And I wonder now what brought me here, so many years ago.
Where the plains climb through the mountains, and the rivers all ran wide,
The rains came in their seasons, to dress the countryside,
And a place called West of Sundown, where the western breezes blow,
Now seems a million miles away and a thousand years ago.
Yes I wonder if the hand of fate, that made me wander here,
And led me to this life style to live out my twilight years,
So far away from what I've been and the life I used to know,
It seems a million miles away and a thousand years ago.
[Instrumental]
The country that I bought and sold the homesteads I have known,
The stock camps, men and branding fires have just been stepping stones
In a dream to make a life for these and watch my fortunes grow,
Now it all seem like a million miles and a thousand years ago.
But I was never one to dwell upon this fortune or my luck
But I'm content with what I have, thankful for what I've got,
And the friends I left behind me and the loved ones I've let go,
Now seem a million miles away and a thousand years ago.
As I sit here on my verandah and watch the sun go down,
And listen to the sounds that make this quiet coastal town,
And I watch the traffic passing by on the highway down below,
And I wonder now what brought me here, so many years ago.
Yes I wonder at the hand of fate, that made me wander here,
And led me to this life style to live out my twilight years,
So far away from what I've been and the life I used to know,
It seems a million miles away and a thousand years ago.
A thousand years ago. A thousand years ago.
