JOSÉ

CARMEN
Keep quiet!
ZUNIGA (forcing the door)
I'm opening up myself, and coming in.
(sees Don José - to Carmen)
Ah! fie, fie! My lovely lady!
This isn't a happy choice; it's demeaning
to take the soldier when you've got the officer.
(to Don José)
Off with you, get moving!
JOSÉ
No!
ZUNIGA
You certainly will go!
JOSÉ
I shall not go!
ZUNIGA (striking him)
Scoundrel!
JOSÉ (drawing his sword)
By thunder! It's going to rain blows!
CARMEN (throwing herself between them)
Devil take the jealous!
(calling)
Help! Help!
(Gypsies appear from all sides. Carmen points to
Zuniga. Le Dancaïre and Le Remendado hurl
themselves upon him and disarm him.)

JOSÉ
Qui frappe ? qui vient là ?
CARMEN
Tais-toi ! Tais-toi !
ZUNIGA (faisant sauter la porte)
J'ouvre moi-même et j'entre.
(voit Don José - à Carmen)
Ah ! fi, ah ! fi, la belle !
Le choix n'est pas heureux ; c'est se mésallier
de prendre le soldat quand on a l'officier.
(à Don José)
Allons ! Décampe !
JOSÉ
Non !
ZUNIGA
Si fait, tu partiras !
JOSÉ
Je ne partirai pas !
ZUNIGA (le frappant)
Drôle !
JOSÉ (sautant sur son sabre)
Tonnerre ! il va pleuvoir des coups !
CARMEN (se jetant entre eux deux)
Au diable le jaloux !
(appelant)
À moi ! à moi !
(Les bohémiens paraissent de tous les côtés.
Carmen d'un geste montre Zuniga aux bohémiens.
Le Dancaïre et Le Remendado se jettent sur lui, le
désarment.)
