If you are just body, then it's true you are no more, but if there's soul beneath that casing you're only now being born. I hoisted your dead weight over my frail but tireless shoulders and I took you to the edge of where I planned to grow a forest. I closed your eyes and dug a hole and made my peace with the fact that this would be your final earthly placement. As I watched your fur and muzzle disappear, it's then that understanding and acceptance replaced my fear.

Every day I made my way back to that tragic spot
I'd sit and watch the birds and insects traverse your burial plot
One day upon arriving I found a tiny sprout
He reached up from the ground as if to say "please just let me out!"

Watch you and others flourish where dead friends once used to be
