"The Kraken" may have drawn inspiration from theme from Jaws (by John Williams), as both Jaws and the Kraken are seen as great oceanic threats. It also shares similarities with the opening of Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The track starts out pianisimo (pp very quiet) with only the low strings and low winds playing, the latter becoming reinforced by high winds and strings, and grows to a fortisimo (ff very loud) and then a fff (extremely loud). The theme features an organ solo. The second half of the piece is much more driving, and was written to accompany the scenes when the Kraken is destroying the Edinburgh Trader and the Black Pearl. It has a driving motor rhythm of 12 semiquavers and a triplet of quavers in almost every bar.
It is heard during the Kraken attacks in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and briefly underscores the moment where Joshamee Gibbs tells William Turner of Kraken lore in the Cypress Forest. The same motif is also used as a theme for the first appearance of the Flying Dutchman, its crew, and underscores the first appearance of Davy Jones. Elements are also heard in the tracks "Wheel of Fortune" and "Hello Beastie".
