(This a translation of a poem
by
Bahar (b.1885). He was the poet
laureate of Iran and a political
prisoner.)
It's a new spring
The trees are blossoming
The clouds over my eyes
are raining dew
This cage like my heart
is tight and dark
Oh God
Oh Cosmos
Oh Nature
Make this dark night light
My nest has been ravaged
and thrown to the wind
by the tyranny of tyrants
and the cruelty of hunters
Oh God
Oh Cosmos
Oh Nature
Make this dark night light
Bird of dawn,
start crying
Make my wound fresh
with your song
With your sighs of fire,
turn this cage upside down
Nightengale,with tied-up wings,
come out of the corner of this cage
Sing the song of humanity's freedom
My nest has been ravaged
and thrown to the wind
by the tyranny of tyrants
and the cruelty of hunters
Oh God
Oh Cosmos
Oh Nature
Make this dark night light
