On a Summer evening
The old man's work was done
And before his cottage door
He sat beside his grandson
Who showed him something he had found
It was so large and smooth and round
'Tis some poor fellow's skull," said he
"Who fell in the Great Victory."
"I find them in the garden
For there's many here about
And often, when I go to plow,
The plowshare turns 'em out.
For many thousand men were slayne
Along these fields, along the plain.
Forgotten e'en by history
They fell in the Great Victory.
My ancestor lived along here then
Yon little stream nearby
They burnt his dwelling to the ground
And he was forced to fly
With fire and sword the country round
Was wasted far and wide
And many a young mother and newborn baby died
They say it was a shocking sight
After the field was won
For many thousand corpses here
Lay rotting in the Sun.
For many thousand gave their lives
Forgotten and unsung
But things like that you know must be
At every famous Victory
They say it was a Great Victory.
Many a thousand men died in that ancient war
But no one can remember what the battle was fought for.
"Twas a very wicked thing,"
His grandson softly said.
The old man gave another sigh,
And nodded his gray head.
For many thousand men were slayne
Along these fields, along the plain.
Forgotten e'en by history
They fell in the Great Victory.
For many thousand gave their lives
Forgotten and unsung
But things like that you know must be
